Ancestry in Action: The Power of People – Voices via Petitions

Next date: Saturday, October 09, 2021 | 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM

These virtual genealogy workshops celebrating Family History Month will help you begin or further an existing research project.  Activism has been a hot topic in the news recently, and you’ve probably been asked to sign a petition for one cause or another on social media. Your ancestors did that to overcome barriers, too! Government records may seem like an obvious place to research ancestors, but there are other, lesser-known resources that can help us identify barriers that our own ancestors overcame as we solve genealogical puzzles. Although the term “activism” is relatively new, our ancestors often advocated for themselves and their communities through formal written requests or “petitions” to the government. Diane will demonstrate different types of petitions and how to find your ancestors—and often, their signatures—in them.
