What is Vision Zero?
Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries through roadway design, education, and policies and regulations that prioritize safe, multi-modal streets.
In November 2019, City Council adopted a resolution committing the City to Vision Zero. On November 10, 2020, TPW will brief Council on the department’s efforts to develop the Vision Zero High-Injury Network (HIN), which is the first step toward reaching the goal of “0.” The HIN is a corridor map highlighting where concentrations of people have been killed and seriously injured in vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle crashes. The map will serve as an invaluable tool to target safety countermeasures and education and in the areas of greatest need throughout the City. The Top 10 locations for vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle crashes have been extracted from the HIN and will be the first locations prioritized for study and project implementation by Transportation Management.
