Request a lead and or copper water test

Because you can’t see, smell or taste lead in your water, it can go undetected. Testing is the only way to determine if there is lead in the drinking water at your home. If any of the following apply, you may want to consider testing:

  • Your service line is classified as either lead, galvanized requiring replacement or unknown.

  • Your home was built before 1989. These are more likely to have lead pipes, fixtures and solder.

  • You see signs of corrosion from your water (frequent leaks, rust-colored water, stained sinks, dishes, or laundry).

If you wish to have your water tested, complete the online form below or contact the Water Customer Service at 817-392-4477 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding city holidays. A laboratory representative will follow up to discuss your needs, explain the sampling procedures and confirm the fees, if any.

Fort Worth offers free lead testing to all locations with an overall service line classification of lead, galvanized-requiring-replacement or unknown. Currently, there are no locations in the Fort Worth water system classified as lead or unknown. There is a fee for testing for lead at locations with an overall service line classification of non-lead, and for copper testing at any location. These fees are noted below.

This testing is coordinated with the water accountholder, and tenants need to contact the property manager or owner about testing.

If you are concerned about your child’s exposure to lead, contact your family physician about having a blood test. Tarrant County Public Health also can provide information about how to have your child’s blood tested for lead.

Options for testing

Fort Worth water quality lab performs the testing. The lab is accredited by the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP).

Rather than having the Fort Worth water lab perform the testing,  you may pay to have your water tested at a TCEQ-approved third-party laboratory. A list of approved laboratories is available on the TCEQ website. Contact the labs directly for information on cost, sampling bottles, and sampling procedures. This list is regularly updated, and labs are both added and removed.

Fees

  • The cost for lead testing is waived for Fort Worth Water customers with a service line classification of lead, unknown or galvanized requiring replacement. Currently, there are no locations in the Fort Worth water system classified as lead or unknown.
  • There is a fee for copper testing  at all locations, regardless of the service line material classification.
  • There is a fee for lead testing at locations with an overall service line material classification of non-lead.
  • There is a separate fee for each faucet sampled. 
  • Fees may be paid at the same time sample bottles are picked up from the Fort Worth Water Quality Laboratory.

 Lead testing only (overall service line classification is non-lead)  $25.00
 Copper testing only (all service line classifications)  $25.00
 Lead and copper testing (overall service line classification is non-lead)  $50.00

Sampling

  • Samples for lead and/or copper testing are taken by the customer.
  • The laboratory performing the testing will provide the sample bottles and sampling instructions. 
  • The water must sit motionless in the pipes for at least six hours before collecting the sample. 
  • Do not run the water or clean the faucet aerator immediately before taking the sample.
  • The water must be from the cold water tap in the kitchen or bathroom. (Kitchen is preferred because bottles will not usually fit under the faucet at the bathroom sink. Do use the bathtub faucet because water from it is not usually consumed.)
