Open and Vacant Structures
Under City Code, any vacant structure that is not properly secured against entry is considered unsafe.
When left open and unsecured, abandoned homes and businesses can quickly become hotspots for illegal activities such as drug use, prostitution, and vandalism. In colder months, unauthorized occupants may attempt to stay warm inside these structures, increasing the risk of accidental fires that can endanger nearby properties.
Unsecured commercial buildings can also fall into disrepair, creating visual blight and contributing to neighborhood decline.
To protect the community and prevent further deterioration, Code Compliance Officers actively work to secure these properties by boarding up open structures and addressing code violations.
Property owners who fail to secure vacant structures may be subject to fines of up to $2,000 per violation.
