Cooper Fire Relief Fund
The Cooper Fire Relief Fund was established as a partnership between the United Way of Tarrant County, Councilwoman Elizabeth Beck, and Near Southside, Inc. on Wednesday, June 25 in the aftermath of the apartment fire that impacted over 850 residents at The Cooper Apartments. To date, the fund has collected approximately $80,000 in community contributions, from corporate donors to individual gifts. The goal of the fund was to provide immediate financial aid to those residents in need who were suffering the greatest impacts from the fire. 100% of the funds raised will be distributed directly to residents of The Cooper. In an effort to provide meaningful assistance to those facing the greatest needs, United Way of Tarrant County will disperse gifts of $500 per apartment unit on a first-come, first-served basis until the fund has been exhausted and no money remains for distribution.
In acknowledgement that the fund is limited and will not be able to serve all residents, we are asking that you please only apply for financial aid if you are in need and facing significant financial hardship due to the fire and/or displacement. The fund will operate on the honor system, for those in the greatest need to self-identify through completing the attached application below. Application review will begin on July 10.
All applications will be reviewed in the order they are received for accuracy and to verify residency to the best of our ability. Applicants will be notified via email if they are approved or are not approved for a $500 gift. Only one gift will be issued per apartment unit, so roommates or couples are asked to apply jointly and divide the money amongst themselves however is best. Once the fund has been exhausted, all others who were not able to be awarded a gift will also be notified and the application will close.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are approved to receive financial aid, you will be asked to provide a government issued ID (drivers license, passport, etc.) and a document that serves as proof of residency when picking up your gift. Acceptable forms of proof include a copy of your lease, a 2025 utility bill with your name and The Cooper address, or other contractual service agreement that verifies The Cooper as your personal address. Funds will be distributed to approved applicants on Wednesday, July 16 at 5:30pm.
Instructions about where to claim your gift will be emailed under separate cover prior to this date. If you would like to request financial assistance via this fund, please apply here as soon as possible: https://forms.gle/AhjLDp2LkZqpAPZT8
Tarrant County Bar Association
The Tarrant County Bar Association is offering free legal advice to residents affected by the fire. To get a referral, residents can call the main Tarrant County Bar Association phone number at 817-338-4092. They will navigate to the Pro Bono line by pressing 3. They will then provide the attorney's name and phone number provided. The caller will then reach out to schedule a time to speak with the attorney. The attorney will provide 15-20 minutes of advice at no charge, and then if they wish to hire the attorney, the caller will need to discuss fees for further assistance at that time.
