Next week, kids will become young architects as they help design a model of Hughes House using 2,000 pounds of canned food. That food will then be donated to the Tarrant County Food Bank for local distribution.

Hughes House is a Fort Worth Housing Solutions and City of Fort Worth mixed-use development partnership going up on a portion of the former Cavile Place public housing site along East Rosedale Street and Amanda Avenue.

What to know: The building event starts at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, with an after-school workshop at Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 5565 Truman Drive. Students will help prebuild the Hughes House mockup while they explore career opportunities in architecture and construction industries. Developer McCormack Baron Salazar and architects from Bennett Partners will discuss architectural concepts, planning and layouts.

The can-struction takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Brighter Outlook, 4910 Dunbar St. A team will build the structure in front of community visitors using a ton of canned food.

View the mockup: A community open house runs through 5 p.m. Dec. 13, and community members are invited to enjoy refreshments and see the finished structure. The display will remain open for viewing until Wednesday, Dec. 21, when the food will be donated.

About Hughes House

The Stop Six Choice Neighborhood Transformation Plan was developed by residents, community leaders and stakeholders to capture a shared vision for a vibrant, safe and sustainable community with access to quality education, healthcare, services and amenities – a neighborhood of choice.

The plan includes replacing the former Cavile Place public housing community with new, mixed-income rental residences in six phases of development. It includes a neighborhood hub for recreation, educational, health and safety services; commercial districts and space for healthcare and educational, economic and other support services.

Hughes House is the second housing phase called for in the Stop Six Choice Neighborhood Initiative.

Why it matters: “Hughes House will be a new center of activity for Stop Six, a place where people can visit from their porch, walk from their homes to neighborhood businesses and services and enjoy playtime with their children – it’s just incredible to see the pieces coming together,” Mayor Pro Tem Gyna Bivens said. “[Hughes House] truly honors the leadership Coach Hughes provided in our community as he mentored generations of players, fans and families.”

Rental units will range in size from a 668-square-foot, one-bedroom apartment to a 1,621-square-foot, four-bedroom townhome on two levels. Units also will be available in two- and three-bedroom configurations.

Check out these amenities:

  • Community swimming pool and splash pad.
  • Fitness center.
  • Dog park.
  • Linear park connecting future phases and providing a pedestrian path east to Rosedale Park and a future community hub.
