Fun facts & History

The Recreation Department acquired the former Meadowbrook Country Club in 1938.  The course first opened to its members in 1924. In 1935, O’Della M. Draughton purchased the country club’s assets at a sheriff’s sale for $1,500.  Her purchase included 161.407 acres of land with such improvements as a two-story clubhouse, a swimming pool, tennis courts, picnic area, golf course, and miscellaneous fixtures.  In 1938, Draughton and her husband, J. W., sold 138 acres along with its improvements to the city for $30,000 while retaining twenty-three acres for themselves.

John Bredemus, who designed numerous courses in Texas, designed the course for the Meadowbrook Country Club. Other courses he designed included Fort Worth’s Ridglea Country Club (the North Course, 1930), Z. Boaz Municipal Course (1929), and Colonial Country Club (with Perry Maxwell and construction assistance by Ralph Plummer, 1936), as well as courses in Houston, Harlingen, San Angelo, Kerrville, and Victoria). The Meadowbrook Country Club Golf Course was opened to the club’s membership in July 1924 at which time it included 130 acres. A club house was expected to be completed by September of that year.

After acquiring the golf course, WPA funds were used for a variety of improvements including new footbridges and improvements to bunkers, tees, and fairways. The clubhouse at Meadowbrook was destroyed by fire in December 1956. Unfortunately, the course’s mascot, Duke, a fox terrier, was killed in the fire.

In the early 1990s, the course received a highly anticipated new clubhouse at a cost of $425,000. The structure included a snack bar, meeting rooms, and renovations to the existing pro shop. It was designed by Nader Design Group. In 2004, the City Council authorized park staff to proceed with a renovation plan for the course that included the development of a patio pavilion adjacent to the clubhouse. In 2005, Nader Design Group received the architectural development contract for this facility as well. It was anticipated that the new facility would attract and accommodate large groups and golf tournaments which would increase the revenue-generating potential for the course. It was constructed in 2006 by HCE Construction.  Among the city’s public golf courses, Meadowbrook is known for its hilly terrain.
