Fun facts and History

The creation of River Trails Park in far northeast Fort Worth not far from the Trinity River, grew out of a partnership between the River Trails Homeowners Association, the Hurst-Euless-Bedford (H-E-B) Independent School District and the park department. When the River Trails subdivision was laid out in the 1980s, appropriate provisions for a neighborhood park had not been included in the development plans. As the community became home to an increasing number of families with young children, the creation of a park became a priority for the homeowner’s association. Residents approached the City about turning an undeveloped parcel originally set aside for an elementary school into a neighborhood park. Because of budget constraints, park officials thought the construction of such a park lay a few years in the future. Under the leadership of Mary Lynn Holder and through the City’s Targeted Area Planning (TAP) program, the neighborhood association was able to negotiate a one dollar a year lease for 25 years with the H-E-B school district, the owner of the property. By using $30,000 in bond money, the park department constructed a playground on the three-acre site. A developer donated a lawn mower for the park’s upkeep. The innovative alliance that resulted in the creation of this park was just one of numerous creative accomplishments that garnered the Parks and Community Services Department the distinction of being named the winner of the National Gold Medal by National Sporting Goods Association Sports Foundation in cooperation with the National Recreation and Park Association in 1996. By 1998, approximately 4.5 acres of parkland was under the ownership of the City of Fort Worth. In 2005 improvements consisting of irrigation and landscaping, concrete walks and site shelter, park benches and furnishings were approved by City Council. On October 29, 2016, a playground funded through gas well revenue was dedicated at the park.
