Parks Recreation & Community Center Imrpovements

The City of Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department's scope of the project includes, but is not limited to, using dredging services to maintain drainage systems, reduce the risk of flooding throughout the City and improve the ecological environment in our lakes and ponds. Four sites will use dredging services: French Lake at Candleridge Park, the duck ponds at Foster Park, Fosdic Lake at Oakland Park, and the pond at Hole #7 of the River Course of Pecan Valley Golf Course.

Dredging Project with Aquatic Life Relocation Plan in Place

The Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department will begin a dredging project at Foster Park on July 12, aimed at restoring the health and function of the park’s ponds. Before work begins, a carefully coordinated aquatic life relocation will take place to minimize impacts to aquatic life that call the park home.

Wildlife-Friendly Approach

Although no endangered species are currently present, protecting local wildlife remains a top priority. The project is led by Jeremy Jordan, a Professional Wetland Scientist and TPWD-permitted stream ecologist, ensuring compliance with environmental standards and best practices.

“Everything we are doing is intended to minimize impacts to aquatic life within the Foster Park ponds from the dredging project,” said Jordan. “That includes relocating fish and phasing the dredging work so two-thirds of the ponds always remain available for ducks, turtles, and other mobile wildlife.”

Why Dredging?

Over time, sediment builds up in ponds, reducing water quality and limiting aquatic habitat. This project is necessary to:

  • Improve overall water quality.

  • Support the long-term sustainability of the ponds.

  • Ensure the health and function of this valued community space.

How It Will Work

  • The ponds will be divided into three sections.

  • Only one section will be dredged at a time to allow mobile wildlife to relocate.

  • Fish and mussels will be moved to a predetermined location by biologists.

  • Ducks, turtles, and other mobile species are expected to shift to the undisturbed areas.

  • mussel survey will be conducted prior to any dredging.

What Happens to the Sediment?

Sediment removed during the project will be de-watered on-site before being hauled away.

Will the Fish & Mussels Come Back?

Over time, the ponds are expected to re-naturalize as Foster Creek continues to flow through the area.

This project is part of our commitment to environmental stewardship and the long-term care of Fort Worth’s natural spaces. Thank you for your patience as we work to make Foster Park an even better place for both people and wildlife.
