Government Services

The Government Services Section is responsible for providing legal services related to the internal functions of the City.  This includes Financial Services, Municipal Court, City Secretary, Public information, Employment, and Legislative Services.

Financial Services

The Financial Services Division provides legal advice related to the financial management of the City.  This includes functions such as the budget, audit, purchasing, and bonds. 

Municipal Court

Attorneys within Government Services provide legal advice and counsel related to the administration of court.  This includes municipal court contracts, legal interpretations, and issues and processes related to the appointment of judges.

City Secretary

The City Secretary has a number of legal requirements that the Division is called to advise upon.  This would include questions regarding elections, the City Charter, and Open Meetings.

Public Information

The City of Fort Worth is governed by the Texas Public Information Act.  Specific attorneys within the Government Services Division are assigned to work with the Public Information Coordinators and city departments in responding to requests for information.  This coordination involves legal interpretation, filing documents with the Texas Attorney General’s office, and providing staff training.

Employment

As a large employer, the City of Fort Worth is responsible for protecting the rights of City employees.  The Government Services Division provides legal opinions and representation to all of the city departments when employment matters arise.  This responsibility includes training new employees on the City’s expectations and the employee’s responsibilities to maintain a harassment free workplace. 

Legislative Services

The Legislative Services Division is responsible for advocating for the City of Fort Worth on both the state and federal level.  In order to provide effective advocacy, the City of Fort Worth follows a set of general policies regarding its stance on legislative matters.

These policies are to prioritize preserving its authority to govern; to advocate for legislation that aligns with the City’s goals and comprehensive plan; and to stand against legislation that could compromise the health, safety and welfare of the residents.
