Tool for Nonverbal Guests

Child's fingers pointing to communication board

All Fort Worth Public Libraries now use communication boards to help individuals with limited verbal skills.

We want everyone to feel welcome, and we recognize that not everyone can communicate in the same way.

  • Communication boards are a type of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tool and serve as a visual aid to help children and adults with limited verbal communication skills.

  • With a communication board, a person can point to pictures or symbols and share what they need, make choices and express how they feel.

  • We aim to reduce barriers and ensure that every guest- regardless of age, ability or speaking skills - has the tools they need to connect with library staff, resources and services.
