The City of Fort Worth has been selected to receive $4.8 million through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) grant program to support the Environmental Services Department’s efforts to strengthen recycling infrastructure, improve post-consumer materials management and enhance local waste management systems.

This funding will support the launch of Fort Worth’s Reuse Program and Recycling Enhancement Project, which focuses on reducing landfill waste, improving the quality of recycled materials and expanding reuse opportunities for residents.

How the funding will be used

Reuse and diversion programs

  • Launch a pilot reuse program at two Drop-Off Stations — Old Hemphill (6260 Old Hemphill Road) and Hillshire (301 Hillshire Drive) — allowing residents to divert quality, usable items such as furniture and electronics for reuse by other residents.

Recycling infrastructure improvements

  • Acquire four new compactors, one for each Drop-Off Station, to support source-separated cardboard diversion and recycling.
  • Make site improvements at the Old Hemphill Drop-Off Station to support scrap metal and scrap tire recycling.

Education and outreach

  • Fund three years of expanded education and outreach to neighborhoods to help reduce contamination in the curbside recycling program.
  • Upgrade the electronic signboards at all four Drop-Off Stations to promote recycling, diversion and solid waste education.

Together, these investments strengthen Fort Worth’s recycling and reuse infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and provide residents with clearer guidance and more options to reduce waste. The SWIFR grant supports Environmental Services’ ongoing efforts to modernize materials management, increase diversion and deliver reliable, cost-effective solid waste services as the city continues to grow.
