Bark and snap! Taking a photo is more than a pastime at Fort Worth Animal Care and Control. It is one of the best ways the FWACC team can showcase adoptable pets. A single perfect shot can capture a dog’s essence and personality, helping it find an adopter who is the perfect match.

The goal of shelter photography is always to connect each dog with the right forever family. Humans are visual creatures, and sometimes we cannot resist those puppy-dog eyes, even when the “puppy” is eight years old.

This week, students from The Oakridge School volunteered their time to photograph pets at the Silcox Animal Shelter. They brought high-resolution cameras and studio lights and set up a bright backdrop where each pet could strut their stuff. Melissa Triebwasser, the multimedia and entrepreneurship coordinator, teaches a course focused on technical skills. Her students learn everything from operating a camera to shooting video to editing. But this visit to Silcox was about much more.

“They’re also learning that they have an opportunity to use the gifts that they have to make a real, positive impact outside of our school walls,” said Triebwasser.

She also wants her students to gain experience working with a real client, honing their skills, giving constructive feedback, and meeting deadlines. “That is the kind of thing we learn as adults, so learning it early gives them a huge leg up.”

Dogs of all sizes, breeds, and personalities stepped into the role of “supermodel” as they pranced onto the photoshoot floor for their close-ups. Curious and wet noses often reached right into the camera lenses. Triebwasser’s students later edited the photos, and FWACC staff added them to each pup’s online profile. Because we know, putting their best paw forward can help a dog find the perfect family that will care for it for a lifetime.

“This is an easy way to get a win for my students and also a community I care deeply about,” added Triebwasser. “As a private school, it is important for us to have a community service heart, and I want the students to know they can have fun and make an impact without needing money, just by using their talents.”
