Stop Unwanted Newspapers, Ads, and Handbills
Fort Worth residents have expressed concerns about unwanted newspapers, advertising flyers, and other commercial handbills being left on their property. In some cases, these materials can create litter, collect in streets and storm drains, or impact neighborhood appearance and residential privacy.
The City cannot completely prohibit the distribution of advertising materials because certain forms of speech are protected under the First Amendment. However, Fort Worth has adopted regulations that help reduce litter and establish reasonable rules for when and how commercial handbills may be delivered. Residents also have the right to post signs or otherwise indicate that they do not wish to receive unsolicited materials.
What Residents Should Know
Courts have recognized that certain organizations and businesses have First Amendment rights related to the distribution of information and advertising materials.
Opting Out
Residents who do not wish to receive unsolicited advertising materials are encouraged to:
Post Visible Signage
Visible signage helps establish that delivery is not permitted under City ordinance.
Place a clearly visible sign such as: "No Soliciting" "No Handbills" "No Trespassing"
Contact Distributors Directly
Residents may contact distributors directly and request removal from delivery lists.
Experience has shown that requests submitted by multiple residents, homeowner associations (HOAs), neighborhood associations, or community representatives are often more effective than individual requests.
