Fun facts

Village Creek Park is located in southeast Fort Worth. The City acquired approximately thirty acres of land from E. W. Henderson in early 1959. The property had been in his family since 1854 when it was given to Henderson’s grandfather as a land grant from the state of Texas. The creation of the park was facilitated by the Village Creek Civic League. It was dedicated on February 21, 1959. Early plans for improvements included the construction of a shelter house, swings, ball diamonds and other recreational facilities. In November 1959, the park board approved the purchase of materials for the construction of a shelter at the park at an estimated cost of $6,000. Located in southeast Fort Worth, the creation of this park was another fulfillment of Hare and Hare’s 1957 park master plan, providing parkland for the expanding neighborhoods of southeast Fort Worth.

The geology of the park is Grayson Marl. Although not necessarily evident at this park, this formation has evidenced twenty-seven species of cephalopods in north-central Texas from the Early Cretaceous. The Grayson Formation lies above Main Street Limestone and below Woodbine Formation. The park soils are of the Ponder Series, which is deep, moderately well drained soils that formed in calcareous marine sediments.

Some species observed here include buffalograss, eastern bluebird, scissortail flycatcher, sachem butterfly, orange sulphur, painted lady, and jumping spider.
