FWACC recognized on National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day

The City of Fort Worth is celebrating National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day with a meaningful milestone. This month, Fort Worth Animal Care & Control (FWACC) reached a 90% Live Release Rate for the fiscal year, meaning most animals that came through the doors of the city’s shelters found safe, loving homes.

Through a formal proclamation, on April 28, 2026, City Council designated the special day in the City of Fort Worth. The day raises awareness about the millions of shelter animals waiting for loving homes and celebrates the life-changing bond between people and their adopted pets.

Reaching a 90% Live Release Rate would not have been possible without strong community partnerships, including Operation Kindness and Spay Neuter Network. These organizations help place animals that need specialized care, support adoptions when shelters are over capacity and provide affordable spay and neuter services that help reduce pet overpopulation in the community.

This fiscal year, thousands of shelter animals have been adopted, fostered and transported from Fort Worth’s shelters. FWACC staff played a vital role in saving those lives. Both staff and leadership were also recognized by City Council for their continued commitment to saving lives.

As the year continues, FWACC plans to launch new programs aimed at strengthening animal welfare services and supporting pets and pet owners across the city. More details will be announced this summer.
