Mayor's Committee on Persons with Disabilities

The Fort Worth Mayor’s Committee on Persons with Disabilities (MCPD) is a standing committee of the Fort Worth Human Relations Commission. This organization consists of citizen volunteers who work together to enhance public awareness of the abilities of individuals with disabilities, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and issues related to accessibility within the community and city government. To accomplish these goals, the MCPD committee:

participates in activities that provide and/or improve access to employment, housing, city facilities and programs for people with disabilities;
increases awareness of ADA accommodations and the Fort Worth anti-discrimination ordinance (Chapter 17, Article III, Division 4 of the Fort Worth City Code), as well as solicits feedback from the community regarding disability issues; and
honors an individual each year who, in their everyday life has raised awareness of living a life of value and made impactful changes in the community that improve life opportunities for persons with disabilities, with the Danny Scarth Trailblazer Award at the Mayor’s Community Engagement Workshops and Neighborhood Awards luncheon held in January.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Title VI & Accommodations

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment (Title I), public services (Title II), public accommodations (Title III), telecommunications (Title IV), and other miscellaneous provisions (Title V).

Housing, Employment and Public Accommodation

Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended (Fair Housing Act), state law (Texas Fair Housing Act), and city ordinance (Human Relations Ordinance) prohibit discrimination in housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, and familial status.

Human Relations Commission

The Civil Rights Office within the Human Resources Department works to enhance public awareness and to foster harmonious human relations throughout the city. To support these efforts, the department provides staff support to the Fort Worth Human Relations Commission (FWHRC) and the Fort Worth Mayor’s Committee on Persons with Disabilities (MCPD), a standing committee of the FWHRC.

Description
The Mayor's Committee on Persons with Disabilities shall be primarily responsible for those areas of Commission interest including, but not limited to, disability concerns including accessibility and accommodations, and shall, subject to the Commission's approval identify activities to promote equal opportunity for Fort Worth disabled residents, provide education on disability topics, and initiate such other actions as deemed appropriate. The Chair of the Mayor's Committee on Persons with Disabilities shall be responsible for setting the date, time and place for Committee meetings, preparing agendas, presiding over the Committee meeting and reporting back on the work of the Committee to the full Fort Worth Hum Relations Commission.
