Fun facts & History
On February 5, 2008, the City Council accepted the dedication of approximately 23 acres of unimproved parkland from Hayco Realty, Ltd. to serve the Marine Creek Ranch subdivision. Approximately three acres were set aside for the Northwest Branch Library, which opened in 2010. On December 2, 2008, the City Council authorized the acquisition of 20.054 acres of land for the expansion of the park, giving it approximately 43 acres.
Recreation
The park has a 0.25 mile cement trail that follows Marine Creek as it flows to Marine Creek Lake. The trail will eventually connect to Tarrant Regional Water District's Marine Creek Lake Park and trail system. A playground with benches and a covered picnic area are adjacent to the elementary school.
Geology
The geology of the park is comprised of Early Cretaceous Fort Worth Limestone and Duck Creek Formations of the early Cretaceous. This formation exhibits ancient marine burrows and Pecten, oyster, echinoid, and ammonite fossils.
Soils
The soils at the park are predominately Slidell Series, which is a calcareous clay soil. A sliver of the park on the west side is split between Sanger and Bolar/Aledo soils. Sanger soils are clayey marine sediments from an ancient inland sea. Bolar soils are moderately deep calcareous while Aledo is shallow calcareous).
Ecology
The ecology overall within the park is a mix of wooded riparian and prairie uplands. The park follows the upper reaches of Marine Creek and protects the riparian corridor that connects to Marine Creek Lake. The Marine Creek watershed encompasses 21,017 acres equaling nearly 33 square miles. or 32. 84 square miles. It's substrate is mostly limestone bedrock with some cobble/gravel at the upper reach, while at the mid and lower reach sites is primarily cobble/gravel with some bedrock. There are interspersed naturally-occurring wetlands and some constructed ponds. (TRWD)
