Fun facts

This reserve park was acquired through City Council M&C 25-0180 on 2/25/25. This site will connect through sidewalk and trails to Marine Creek Lake Park and Tarrant Regional Water District's Marine Creek Reservoir trail system.

Recreation

The park is in reserve status until a future date when amenities will be constructed.

History

This land may likely have been park of ranch property associated with the Sansom family who ran a large cattle ranch in the late 1800s encompassing thousands of acres in/near Fort Worth. Nearby parks that were previously the Sansom ranchland include Buck Sansom Park, Marion Sansom Park, and Marine Creek Linear Park.

This park is near Marine Creek Lake, which was built to catch and slow down flooding in the Stockyards. The 250 acre lake is popular for recreation such as kayaking, small boating, fishing, and hiking. There is a 6-mile loop trail around the lake. In the future, Paloma Park will be connected to Marine Creek Lake via trails.

Geology

The majority of the park is comprised of Early Cretaceous Fort Worth Limestone and Duck Creek Formations, which include burrows and marine megafossils such as pecten, oysters, echinoids, and ammonites.

Soils

The soils are evenly split between Purves and Aledo-Bolar soil series. The Purves series, which consists of shallow, well drained, slowly permeable soils formed in ancient interbedded limestone and marl. The Aledo-Bolar Complex soil series consists of shallow, well drained, moderately permeable soils on gently sloping to steep uplands; that formed in interbedded limestones and marls of the Cretaceous Period.

Ecology

Originally, the site would have been prairie, but over the years, woody species established due to lack of fire. The park is heavily wooded and provides important food and shelter for wildlife.
