The holidays are just ahead, bringing lots of celebratory meals.

Often our food around the holidays is heavy in fats, oils and grease, which come from meats, butter and margarine, lard, food scraps, sauces, salad dressings, dairy products and cooking oil. When these substances go down the drain, they harden and cause sewer pipes to clog. This can be very expensive to fix.

The best solution is preventative:

  • Collect large amounts of grease and oils in a sealable container and take it to the Environmental Collection Center, 6400 Bridge St.
  • For grease that cannot be poured into a container, wipe with a paper towel to soak up the grease and put the paper towel in the trash.
  • Let food cool and scrape off excess food from pans and plates before rinsing with cool water.
  • Avoid relying on your garbage disposal to handle food scraps. Put food scraps in the trash.
