Lake Worth Monster returns to City Hall ahead of annual Monster Bash

Is the Lake Worth Monster real? More than five decades after reports of a mysterious creature captivated Fort Worth, the legend continues to intrigue residents and now visitors can get a closer look at the story without venturing into the woods.

A Lake Worth Monster exhibit is on display in the lobby near the council chamber at Fort Worth City Hall through Sept. 9. The exhibit can be viewed during normal City Hall business hours and offers a look at the local legend that has become part of Fort Worth folklore.

The story began in the summer of 1969, when residents reported seeing a strange, hairy creature near Lake Worth and Greer Island. Descriptions varied, but reports commonly characterized the creature as a large, furry, part-man, part-goat figure. The sightings quickly captured the attention of local residents and made headlines, turning the Lake Worth Monster into one of Fort Worth’s most enduring legends. Whether the creature was a genuine mystery, an elaborate prank or simply a good story, Fort Worth has embraced the legend.

This year the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge will celebrate the story with Lake Worth Monster Bash. The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Nature Center, 4600 Broadview Drive.

The family-friendly Halloween celebration will feature vendors and exhibits, hayrides, guided hikes and cryptozoology presentations. The event gives visitors an opportunity to learn more about the legendary creature while enjoying the natural beauty of the Nature Center.
