Beginning October 1, 2026, the City of Fort Worth’s health plan coverage for weight loss medications will change. Read this notice carefully so you understand your options and can take appropriate action, based on your medical needs.
Why am I receiving this notice?
To advise you that the city will no longer contribute to the cost of weight loss medications through covered pharmacy plans, effective October 1, 2026.
What is changing?
Starting October 1, 2026, weight loss medications will no longer be covered on City health plans. This includes, but is not limited to, brand name GLP-1s such as Wegovy, Zepbound, Saxenda, and Trizepatide, in both injectable and oral forms.
- This means that both plan coverage and City financial contributions to these medications will end.
- Participants who wish to continue use must seek other options for purchase.
- Since coverage will end, weight loss medications will no longer count toward your deductible or maximum out-of-pocket limits.
Why is the city making this change?
The city must ensure that its health plans remain accessible to the more than 12,000 employees, retirees, and dependents covered by this benefit. The rising utilization and cost for GLP-1 medications for weight loss is no longer sustainable. As a result, the city is aligning its coverage with practices adopted by peer public and private employers.
What remains the same?
Coverage for diabetic-related medications, including GLP-1s, will not change.
